I blame the parents
It was a warm summer's evening and the McSmith family were relaxing in the garden. Little Jack, who was twelve years old, was out playing with his father's gun. His sister Sasha, who was nine years old, was trying to convince him to give her a go. The gun went off, and poor Sasha was struck by a piece of shrapnel in the stomach. "Now look what you made me do!" shouted Jack. The doctor was called, and Sasha was rushed into intensive care. The doctors worked late into the night trying to save her but sadly Sasha passed away the next morning. Jack was distraught, and his parents were shattered. "It was an accident," Jack said with tears in his eyes, "I was only playing with the gun." "No, Jack," they said, "You killed your sister. I don't think you can live with us any more." Jack left the house without saying a word, and went off to the cemetery to stand near his sister's grave and cry, for he was heartbroken. He was lost and alone, a killer whose own parents had disowned him. A year passed, then two, and Jack began to think about his future. He couldn't go any longer living in exile, be needed to turn his life around. Jack had a strange idea and decided to go and see the doctor. He asked the doctor if there was any way they could bring his sister back to life. "Oh, no," said the doctor, "that is impossible. Although I have heard about a new hologram technology which could be the next best thing." The doctor explained that they could perform the hologram surgery, but that it would take quite a while. Jack saw this as his only option and so asked the doctor to proceed. The doctor said he would do it, so Jack set off for the laboratory. The surgery took two weeks but eventually Sasha was resurrected, albeit as a hologram. Sasha said she was so happy to have been brought back to life, but Jack didn't believe her. "Are you really my sister?" Jack asked, "Or are you just a simulation?" Sasha was confused by the question, and said, "Do you really expect me to answer?" Jack didn't know what to think but he decided to take Sasha back home with him. Sasha protested, but Jack said, "You will be safer with me than you were before." "Really?" Sasha asked, "You're not going to shoot me again?" "Of course not," said Jack. "You're my sister." When Jack and Sasha arrived at home, their parents were shocked to see them both. "Sasha!" they cried. "How could you come back?" "Jack asked the doctor to bring me back as a hologram," Sasha replied. "If I were to disappear, it would be very sad," Jack said. "Jack, I'm glad you brought her back to us," their parents said, "We've missed you both terribly." "No one has ever been back from the dead like you, Sasha, but, Jack, the question is, will you really stay in the house with us?" "If you'll let me then of course I will," Jack answered. "Then you have to be my little brother too!" Jack turned his head to see who was speaking, his parents had adopted a sixteen year old named Penelope. "I'm so glad you're home," she said. The End
