The tree

I was walking to school one morning when I noticed something up in a tree. The branches of the tree were laden with many little baskets. I wanted to get a closer look at what was in the baskets. I climbed the tree to see, but as I was going up the tree, I came across another little basket. In that basket, I saw a baby fox having a nap. I was a little afraid, so I ran away as fast as I could. When I got to school, I told my friends about what I had seen. They were very interested and asked if they could see the little fox. After school, I took my friends to the tree so they could have a look. When we got there, I told them that there was no fox in the tree. I had changed my mind about showing them and was hoping this would stop them from looking. I told them that we were going home, but before I could leave the tree, they said "Yes, come on, we want to see the fox." Before I knew it, one of my friends was climbing the tree up to where the baskets were. When she got to the basket, she started to open it, but then she stopped and looked down into it. A look of total shock appeared on her face. She asked if I had seen anything like that before, but I could not say. She said that in the basket there was a baby hedgehog. "I guess the fox must have dropped it." "I'm not sure," I said, "I think that might be a different basket." We all climbed down the tree, and I said that the basket must be for some other person. I wanted to get my friends out of the way before investigating further. When we got home, I told my mother what had happened. She said that she wanted to go and look in all of the baskets. I had a bad feeling that this was going to be a lot of trouble. We took a ladder from the garage and headed back to the tree. We were climbing up when something caught my eye. There was a strange symbol carved into the trunk of the tree. I thought that I recognized it as the mark of a bad witch. My mother looked in each of the baskets and found that each one contained a different baby animal. She was puzzled about how this had happened. I had a very bad feeling about what would happen next. When my mother got to the very last basket she was very surprised. The last basket contained a human baby and it looked like it was only a few days old. My mother had been careful to make sure that she and I were the only ones who knew that the children were the princesses. These baby animals were all princesses who had been trapped in the tree by a witch. When she opened the basket she found that the baby was perfect. She decided to try and rescue the baby. "Princesses," she said, "I am going to take you out of the basket now and let you go home with me." So we gathered up all of the baskets from the tree and took the princesses home with us. When we got to our house, we found that our mother was more exhausted than we had ever seen her. "It must be the witch," she said, "I've been cursed!" My mother was very worried, she tried to make the princesses comfortable, but she was still very tired. I was doing my best to help but there were a lot of princesses to look after. I thought about finding the prince but I knew that was not possible. Suddenly I heard a loud cackle and turned round to see the witch standing outside. I was about to run but she stopped me. "Give me back those princesses and I'll let you go," said the witch. But I looked at my mother who was crying, she looked so tired and sad. "No chance!" I shouted, and I challenged the witch to a duel. "A witch," said the princesses, "not just any witch, a witch that will defeat you!" This made me even more scared but I was still prepared to fight the witch. The witch looked at me and said, "I don't want to fight you. How about we have a dance off instead?" The witch had a horrible dance in which she did this and that and then suddenly vanished. I, on the other hand, performed the best dance any of the princesses had ever seen. "There is no place like home," the princesses said, and they were finally returned to the kingdom. The End
